It has very often occurred to me when teaching at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) that the students asking a fundamental question regarding their confusion and misunderstanding about the profession of Industrial Engineer. They argued that the profession of Bachelor of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and many other engineering fields are very clear. Bachelors of Civil Engineering design bridges, buildings, etc. Likewise, Mechanical Engineers design planes, cars and others. Nevertheless, what will Industrial Engineers do?
Normally, my answer begins with the assertion that this situation shows that the confused students actually understand about Industrial Engineering, because if you do not think and do not understand, of course you won't be confused. One phase that the student of Industrial Engineering commonly experience is the "phase of confusion".
There are two things that underlie the emergence of these questions:
1. They feel that the lectures taught in Industrial Engineering are stand-alone knowledge (with no relation to each other). Such perception is very detrimental. Let's suppose that we teach them about the construction of houses. We just teach them about the tile, wood, stone, cement, etc. However, we never teach them how to make a house.
I am aware of their level of understanding, because they are still at the year two and three so they have not been taught any integrated lectures/subjects such as Layout, or Industrial Engineering Planning. It can be said that a systematic approach is needed.
2. They can't imagine the areas of work that will be performed. This may occur because of their lack of knowledge of industrial system or business system that consists of a sequence of integrated process. They observe that the course was identical to the Industrial Engineering profession.
This is challenging for me as a teacher trying to explain difficult topics to become easy to understand, to simplify the complicated things, and to reduce the burden of the students. I never imagined when I was a kid l that I would become a teacher. My father and grandfather were businessmen who had to keep track the development of the consumer and the dynamic business environment. Alhamdulillah, the teaching profession that I currently pursue is a teacher in a field close to my father and my grandfather's profession, which is related to the field of Business and Industry, known as Industrial Engineering which I have been doing for more than 40 years.
Like the sun approaching the twilight, then in a life that is reaching towards the end, nothing can be remembered by a teacher than seeing his students succeed in life, giving benefits to the mankind, religion, country and nation.
As a teacher, I thank Allah, I hope that my devotion will be received by Allah as good deeds which will continue to benefit fellow humans. As stated in accordance with the hadith by The Prophet Muhammad :
"The best man is who brings most benefits to other men".
I would like to thank the Department of Industrial Engineering who gave me the opportunity to deliver this memorabilia to commemorate the end of my term as a teacher in the Department of Industrial Engineering's. I, and on behalf of my family, would like to apologize for our mistakes to the entire staff of faculty and staff of TU-TI.
May Allah SWT gives grace and guidance to us all. All the praise and gratitude we pray to Allah for His mercy and grace, and may Allah bestow blessings and hidayah upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
